かんざきを歩こう 「仁比山・城原地区散策マップ」
№2 水車の里コースを紹介します。
【コースの概要】
江戸時代に城原川に設けられた大井手堰から分水された水路には、仁比山水車と呼ばれる多くの水車が稼働していました。当地の地形と城原川の豊富な水流を活かし、強い力を得るため独特の構造の水車でした。明治30年頃には約60基もの水車が稼働し、製粉・精米・製材などの動力源として水車群を形成していました。特に、神埼の特産品である製麺業は、南部平野部で生産された小麦と清涼な水、さらにこの仁比山水車により支えられ来ました。現在は、現役で稼働する水車は見られませんが、当時の水車の様子を知ることのできる水車跡や水路、また復元された水車小屋と水車が整備されています。
